Volant Model for GA Crew Resource Management

1998 USAirways development of AQP Program used this Volant Model to highlight the concept of Task Loading.

So what is Task Loading? Simply Task + Available Time = task loading

Departure time: :30 minutes or more late with falling visibility, aircraft still must be pre flighted. Maybe, single pilot, etc.
Potential for Error?

More errors are likely to occur when heavily task loaded.

In the Green: Errors may occur, but will be caught.

In the Yellow: Errors may occur, but they may not be caught and may become cumulative.

In the Red: Errors will occur that are not caught.

Task Loading

Task loading begins with the " job at hand"

Different Phases of Flight have Different Task Loading.

Pre-departure,taxi,takeoff etc.

Where would you think the greater Task Loading accrue?

Descent, Approach, Landing.

But as we reduce Task Loading we are always trying to move back to the Green.

What can increase Task Loading outside the aircraft?
  • ATC
  • WEATHER
  • LOW VISIBILITY
  • AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE LIMITS
  • AIRPORT FACTORS
Crew Factors
  • Fatigue
  • Stress
  • Inattention
  • Assertiveness
  • Complacency
Reality
Number of tasks need to be done
Number of task that Can be done
  • Job to be Done!
  • Additive Conditions
  • Crew Factors
  • Attitude
  • Level of training
  • State of mind
  • Physiology
  • Time
Pilots are encouraged to continually assess additive conditions
  • Changing weather
  • Mechanical/ inoperative equipment.
  • First time doing anything.
Self-diagnosis

What is it like to be in the Green ?
Or the Yellow, or Red.
